Winter Houseplant Care

by WAHOUSES

Taking care of your houseplants during the winter months is essential as the conditions can be more challenging for them. Here are some tips to help you keep your houseplants healthy and thriving during winter.

1. Adjust Watering

During winter, most houseplants enter a period of dormancy, which means they require less water. Be mindful of overwatering, as the soil takes longer to dry out in cooler temperatures. Check the moisture level of the soil before watering and adjust accordingly.

2. Monitor Humidity Levels

Indoor heating can cause the air to become dry, which can be detrimental to certain houseplants. Increase humidity around your plants by misting them regularly or placing a tray filled with water and pebbles near them. Grouping plants together can also create a mini microclimate of higher humidity.

3. Provide Adequate Light

Days are shorter during winter, so it's important to ensure your plants still receive enough light. Place them near south-facing windows to maximize the amount of sunlight they receive. If natural light is limited, consider using grow lights to supplement their needs.

4. Adjust Temperature

Houseplants generally prefer temperatures between 60-75°F (15-24°C). Avoid placing them near drafts or cold windows, as sudden temperature drops can harm them. Keep them away from heat sources as well, to prevent drying out.

5. Limit Fertilization

Houseplants typically have reduced growth during winter, so they require less fertilizer. Hold off on fertilizing unless your plants show signs of active growth. If you do fertilize, opt for a diluted or slow-release fertilizer.

6. Clean Leaves

Dust can accumulate on your plant's leaves, blocking sunlight absorption. Wipe the leaves gently with a damp cloth to keep them clean and healthy.

7. Reduce Repotting

It's best to avoid repotting during winter unless absolutely necessary. Transplanting can cause stress to your plants, and they may not recover as well during their dormant phase.

8. Pest Prevention

Indoor pests can still be a concern during winter. Inspect your plants regularly for any signs of pests, such as webs, sticky residue, or damaged leaves. If you notice an infestation, take appropriate measures to address it promptly.

Different plants have varying care requirements, so it's always a good idea to research specific care recommendations for each of your houseplants.
