Washington Stonehenge

by WAHOUSES

The Washington Stonehenge is a replica of the original Stonehenge monument located in Maryhill, Washington, USA.

It was built by Sam Hill, a wealthy American businessman, as a tribute to the soldiers from Klickitat County who died during World War I. Hill believed that the original Stonehenge was a place of human sacrifice, and he wanted to build a similar structure in honor of the soldiers who had made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.

The Washington Stonehenge is made of concrete and stands 30 feet tall and 60 feet in diameter. It is not an exact replica of the original Stonehenge, as it is oriented to face true north rather than the sunrise on the summer solstice. However, it does include similar features such as the upright stones and lintels, and the inner horseshoe of trilithons.

The monument was completed in 1929 and dedicated on Memorial Day of that year. It has since become a popular tourist attraction and is maintained by the Maryhill Museum of Art. The Washington Stonehenge is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
