Seahawks had former greats in camp to help with coaching

The Seattle Seahawks are gearing up for their first preseason game of 2023 against the Minnesota Vikings at Lumen Field. However, the team is not planning to play their starters for long, if at all, as there is no real need for it.

The coaching staff of the Seahawks is understandably cautious about risking their key players in a meaningless game, especially considering the team's current injury concerns. It would be unwise to expose important players to potential injuries just before Week 1.

Moreover, the Seahawks already have a good sense of their team's capabilities from their practice sessions and mock game. The upcoming Vikings game will provide an opportunity for players trying to secure a spot on the roster to showcase their skills. Nevertheless, here are a few highlights from Sunday's practice.

One of the commendable aspects of Pete Carroll's coaching style is his openness to former Seahawks players joining practice and actively participating in coaching the current team. Richard Sherman has frequented the camp, and his guidance undoubtedly contributed to Tariq Woolen's success last year. As both Sherman and Woolen are big cornerbacks, Sherman's expertise in teaching Woolen is unparalleled.

Sunday's practice also saw the presence of former defensive linemen Michael Bennett and Cliff Avril, who remain friends off the field. They took charge of leading the defensive linemen in drills. Bennett is also involved in Seattle's preseason broadcasts, and Avril resides in the area year-round.

Head coach Pete Carroll expressed his appreciation for having Bennett and Avril in meetings and working with the defense. Their presence is not seen as a distraction but rather as a valuable contribution to the team. Having former Seattle players actively involved in camp fosters a sense of unity and knowledge sharing among the current and past players, a characteristic that sets the Carroll-led Seahawks apart from many other NFL teams.
