Julio Rodríguez is on fire!
The outfielder for the Seattle Mariners marked his 18th hit in five games when he kicked off Sunday's game against the Houston Astros with a double.
During Saturday's game, which ended in a 10-3 victory for the Mariners, Rodríguez made his mark with four hits. His single in the seventh inning took his total to 17 hits in four games. As per MLB.com, this surpasses the record of Milt Stock from the Brooklyn Robins (now known as the Los Angeles Dodgers), who had 16 hits in the same number of games back in 1925. This also marked the fourth consecutive game with four hits for the Seattle standout.
"Frankly, I only realized that I had set a four-game span record when they announced it on the scoreboard," said the 22-year-old Rodríguez. "I was unaware prior to that."
Manager Scott Servais shared his amazement, saying, "I've never witnessed anything like this. No one in Major League Baseball history has. But what else can you say? Julio is just red hot at the moment."
Dating back to Wednesday's 6-5 victory against the Kansas City Royals, Rodríguez has achieved 18 hits out of 23 attempts. On Thursday, he had a flawless 5-for-5 performance, including a decisive three-run home run, securing a 6-4 win. He's also clocked five stolen bases during this period. His season stats show a .278 batting average, 21 home runs, and 33 stolen bases.
After a successful 13-3 run, the Mariners are poised to secure the third and final wild-card spot in the American League, currently half a game ahead of the Toronto Blue Jays.
Rodríguez, who participated in his second All-Star game this summer in Seattle and his second consecutive Home Run Derby where he set a record with 41 home runs in the first round, continues to make his mark in the league.
