The Ideal Sleep Time to Improve Cardiovascular Well-Being
Sleep habits have long been regarded as a personal choice, with some needing complete darkness and silence to drift off, while others find comfort in falling asleep to their favorite TV show.
However, a recent study exploring the connection between heart health and sleeping patterns has revealed that there may be an ideal time to sleep in order to improve cardiovascular well-being. Unfortunately for night owls like myself, it seems that the optimal time is not the beloved 2 am.
Scientists conducted this study with the hope of determining if there is a specific time to sleep that reduces the risk of cardiovascular diseases. They surveyed a staggering 103,712 individuals over the course of seven days and examined the correlation between their bedtime and the development of heart issues.
During the follow-up period of 5.7 years, a total of 3,172 cases of cardiovascular disease were reported. The researchers discovered that those who went to sleep between the hours of 10 pm and 11 pm had the lowest risk of developing such diseases. On the other hand, individuals who went to bed earlier than 10 pm or later than 11 pm showed an increased risk.
Interestingly, the study also found that the relationship between cardiovascular disease and sleep onset time was more pronounced in females. Cardiovascular disease encompasses a range of conditions that affect the heart or blood vessels, including coronary heart disease, strokes, peripheral arterial disease, and aortic disease. These conditions are often caused by factors such as high blood pressure, smoking, high cholesterol, diabetes, a family history of cardiovascular diseases, and age.
To prevent the onset of cardiovascular disease, the NHS recommends reducing smoking and alcohol consumption, as well as adopting a healthy diet and engaging in regular exercise. By making these lifestyle changes, individuals can significantly reduce their risk of developing these conditions.
