No. 5 UW Huskies Noteworthy Achievements
Under head coach Kalen DeBoer, Washington's football team has an impressive overall record of 19-2. This season, they have started with a perfect 8-0 record, a feat that has only been accomplished five times in the school's history.
The Huskies currently lead the nation in passing offense and rank fifth in total offense. Their punt return defense is ranked third in the nation, allowing only -0.5 yards per return, while their kick return defense is ranked tenth, allowing an average of 14.9 yards per return.
Michael Penix Jr., in his short time as a Husky, has already made a significant impact. He holds five of the top-10 single-game passing yard records in Washington's history, including his outstanding performances in the first three games of this season. Penix has thrown for 473 yards against Michigan State, ranking third in the school's history, followed by 450 yards against Boise State, ranking sixth, and 409 yards against Tulsa, ranking tenth. Moreover, he currently holds the third-highest number of career touchdown passes at Washington with 51. In 16 out of his 21 games at UW, Penix has thrown multiple touchdown passes. His 7,586 career passing yards rank him fifth in the school's history.
Penix's exceptional performance extends beyond his individual achievements. He is currently leading the FBS in passing yards and pass yards per game, ranking second in total offense, third in pass touchdowns, and sixth in pass efficiency. Furthermore, Washington's offense has seen contributions from various receivers, with Jalen McMillan, Rome Odunze, Ja'Lynn Polk, and Germie Bernard (twice) all scoring rushing touchdowns this season. This is a notable improvement compared to previous years, where the team had only eight games in its history with two players reaching 100 receiving yards in a single game. In this season alone, this has occurred in five out of eight games.
Washington's success is not limited to their offensive prowess. They currently hold the nation's second-longest active winning streak among FBS teams, having won 15 consecutive games. Only Georgia, with a 24-game winning streak, surpasses them. This winning streak is the third-longest in the school's history, falling behind a 40-game streak from 1908 to 1916 and a 22-game streak from 1990 to 1992.
The Huskies have also demonstrated their offensive dominance by scoring 40 or more points in their first four games this season. This is the first time since 1944, when they achieved this feat against Willamette and Whitman, that Washington has scored 40 or more points in four consecutive games in the same season. Excluding the shortened 2020 season, the team has won 10 or more games in four out of the last six seasons, highlighting their consistency and success in recent years.
